World Parrot Refuge left in disarray
21st-Jun-2016 09:50 pm
birds, peaceful

Hi friends, you might have heard about this through your parrot circles or in the news, but I thought I would post it here as well. The World Parrot Refuge on Vancouver Island is in shambles. The founder died in February and since then the facility has had a rat infestation as well as facing eviction by August 1st. Volunteers are hoping former owners will take back their birds or that new homes can be found. Greyhaven Exotic Sanctuary is one of the groups taking donations. If you do a seach on Google you can find lots of stories about it :/

This is so, so sad. I'm going to go read more about it - thanks for sharing. :(

Yeah, it's all so sad and upsetting! They were able to reunite some people with their parrot, but geez, what if you had died and thought you were doing the best thing for your bird? :/

This is ironic as I was planning on visiting this sanctuary on my next trip to BC...now it will be closed by time we get there :(
Hoping the parrot lover community on Vancouver Island can help those birds. I suspect many will end up being re-located on the main land though

Quite! I was on Vancouver Island in 2012 and wish I had gone. We even drove by it but there wasn't time to go - we were staying in Nanaimo and my husband's relatives drove me all over. Wish I had planned that better :)

The parrots can't find US homes due to agricultural laws and CITES apparently. I am hopeful something can be done.

By main land I went the BC interior ha ha...a bigger population in the city of Vancouver would have more bird lovers who might help (as opposed to Victoria on Vancouver Island which is a government/touristy kind of town)

What really sort of gets under my skin, which is no fault of anyone's, is quite a few of those birds are not pet-like birds, IIRC some are former breeders and maybe even some wild caught. Birds like that should not be forced into homes. And maybe they are going to re-home the more tame ones and try to keep the less tame ones in a sanctuary type place. But it just makes me sad. I also don't get why on their website after the owner died it said they were going to be fine money wise and staff/volunteer wise and then they started shutting things down and now this. It all just sucks and I pray/send my thoughts to those parrots.
